Frequently asked questions

What is the UCAT Venn Logic trainer?

Venn Logic is a free UCAT Decision Making trainer for Venn diagram questions. It focuses on turning wording into the right region of a diagram: exactly two, at least two, only, neither, and must be true or could be true. Each drill is ten questions drawn at random from a bank of 150, each with four options, and every answer comes with an explanation, the common trap and a reason for each option.

How do Venn diagram questions work in UCAT Decision Making?

Venn diagram questions give you information about overlapping groups, as a diagram or in words, and ask you to draw a conclusion or choose the diagram that fits. Some are single-answer questions worth 1 mark; others ask you to judge several statements Yes or No for 2 marks, with 1 mark for a partially correct answer. Most errors come from reading the wording loosely rather than from the arithmetic.

What is the difference between exactly two and at least two in a Venn question?

Exactly two means people in two sets but not the third, so it leaves out the centre where all three overlap. At least two includes the three pairwise regions and the centre. Only one set means a single region with no overlap, and neither means outside every circle. Before calculating, mark the regions the wording names: the phrase tells you which region to count, not just which number to find.

How do I solve three-set Venn questions without double counting?

Use total mentions. When you add up the count for each set, anyone in exactly two sets is counted twice and anyone in all three is counted three times. So total mentions equal those in exactly one set, plus twice those in exactly two, plus three times those in all three. Remove the extra counts to find how many are in at least one set, then add anyone in none to get the group size.

How do I answer minimum and maximum overlap Venn questions?

When the overlap is not given, work out the range it could take. The maximum overlap is the size of the smaller set. The minimum is the two set sizes added together minus the whole group, or zero if that is negative. With 30 students, 20 studying French and 18 Spanish, at least 8 must study both and at most 18 can. A statement about how many must overlap depends on the minimum.

How should I use the Venn Logic drills?

Read the free Venn diagrams guide linked on the start screen, then start. Answer with a click or the number keys 1 to 4. The results show your score, your pace against the exam average of about 63 seconds per question and your accuracy by skill, weakest first. Use Retry incorrect straight away; missed questions also come back for review a day later, and new drills serve questions you have not seen first.
